Bio Gaia Probiotic Drops are a sanity saver for anyone who has a newborn with tummy issues. From day one my daughter’s immature digestive system caused her to have gassy bouts, during which she would scream in pain for hours on end. This product was referred to us by our pediatrician as a preventative measure to reduce gas, and we have been taking it (daily) ever since. The drops contain lactobacillus (a form of good bacteria that naturally occurs in our stomachs) which aid digestion. You simply give your infant 5 drops a day, either in a bottle mixed with milk, or directly into their mouths. About 4 days after first administering the drops, we had a whole new baby. Every now and then she’ll have a bad tummy day, but she no longer suffers from daily gas cramps (and my husband and I no longer suffer from daily headaches!!).
The product has a few slight faults (although they pale in comparison to the benefits). Firstly, as with all probiotics, the bottle must remain refrigerated, which means this product is not very travel friendly. Secondly, most pharmacies do not carry the product ‘on-hand’ because of its refrigeration requirements, so you usually have to order them a day or two in advance. Thirdly, the dropper is not designed to drop directly into an infant’s mouth – which is a real pain if your baby is breastfed (however, it’s not such a pain if your baby gets a bottle because then you can just add them in). And finally, the price is a bit of a bummer – a 5mL bottle runs about $30 and will last you approximately 3 weeks (but come to think of it, we would have easily spent that much on wine in order to cope with her crying, had we not discovered the drops!!!).
The Bio Gaia website, includes a whole list of benefits (for people of all ages) associated with the regular use of Bio Gaia, including a reduction in the occurrence of infections (including Candida), diarrhea, and constipation; a reduction in the side-effects from antibiotic use and irritable bowel syndrome; and a reduction in the risk of developing allergies. And just in case you are a nerdy-mom like me, the website includes summaries of the clinical trials that back-up these claims.

I just started giving this to my 5-week-old and she has been passing really smelly gas since then (which she wasn’t doing before). I’m wondering if this is a coincidence or if it could be from the Bio Gaia.
Hi Kim!
Congrats on your new arrival!
My daughter definitely did pass more gas when she was taking the drops. It seemed like the more gas she passed the happier she was, and that was a good thing! Unfortunately, I didn’t notice the presence or absence of odours associated with the gas – however, when it comes to gas, I’m not sure odours are a bad thing!
Have you noticed a change in your daughter since using the drops? (I swear this product changed our lives!) How did you hear about Bio Gaia?
Hi Jo,
Our 2 week old daughter was screaming in pain as a result of tummy/gas troubles. Barb showed us your blog on the Bio Gaia Probiotics. We did some research on the product, based on your recommendation, and decided to give it a go. We are five days in to using the drops and have noticed a huge difference. Gone is the 5 pm – midnight shift of screaming in pain. We have a few short lived bursts each day, but nothing like before. She is passing more gas, but, as you say, that is a good thing.
FYI- London Drugs at Coquitlam Centre had the product on hand. The pharmacist said that most London Drugs will have it in stock, thus eliminating the need to order in advance.

I want to highly recommend these to parents of babies with reflux, as well. I’ve been using them since December for my 4-month-old, and if she misses a day or two, we all pay the price. They are SO worth it. I wish these had been available when I had my first (colicky) baby.
Dear Jo
but I want to share a small tip. The easiest way to give the drops to a breastfed baby is putting 5 drops on a small plastic spoon and then just turning it over in the baby mouth and “dry” it off on the tongue. Actually it is to be preferred also for bottle fed babies. If they don’t finish the bottle for some reason they don’t get the whole dose and if the formula is to warm when added, the healthy bacteria might get hurt.
Thank you for sharing your positive experience of BioGaia Probiotic drops. Since I work at BioGaia (in Sweden), I’m not going to tell you how my kids have benefited from our products, that would be too obvious “marketing”
I also want to stress the fact that if the drops are kept at ambient temperature when travelling, you can still use them. After a couple of days/weeks the level of bacteria will go down, how much depends on the temperature, but the drops will not be dangerous or get an off-flavour or anything. What’s important is that the whole bottle is used right away and not put back in the fridge at home and stored for some months. Then the level of bacteria will have gone down too much. // Lotta
Have you tried the straws for you and your husband? I’ve been wanting to get some but they are kinda pricey. It’s about thirty bucks for thirty straws. I might stick with eating high quality yogurt until I save up the dough.
I have been using the biogaia straws and chewables for my 2 year old that has has tummy issues since he was born. His pediatrician just recommended these probiotics for him to assist with his lactose and sucrose intoleratnce. He was having diarrhea for 3 straight weeks. It is completely gone after only two days of treatment and he can now eat/drink anything he wants without any problem.
My 2 month old has only been on the drops fro 1.5 days and she seem to be better. I have not noticed an increased in gas yet. I think as long as it is coming out, the better she will feel. We have not had to hold her all night on the second day and she actually sits in her bed/swing without crying for 20 min or so. These probiotics are wonderful. I wish I would have had them for my other two boys.
I have read about bio gaia online and im very interested in trying it with my 2 month old baby. She seem to have gas and reflux problems. Unfortunately this is not available where i live (philippines). I plan to purchase it online and have a friend hand carry it home. Can you please suggest how the infant drops should be stored for travel. Thanks!!!
Hey Veronica,
That’s a shame that it’s not supplied locally.
It’s probably best if your friend asks the pharmacist their recommendation for how to travel with it. But I’m sure if she packs it against a freezer-pack and puts it in a thermo bag of sorts, then it should hopefully make the journey!
Good-luck with it!
Jo
HI Jo!
Thanks for the advice =)
Veronica
My daughter’s pediatrician recommended this to ease her fussiness, gas, and reflux. After reading your reviews, I’m definitely going to order it online.
does bio gaia help constipation, my baby hasn’t poohed in 7 days and i have now been using bia gaia for 4 days?
I heard about these drops from a friend who had a baby with tummy problems. I am currently trying desperately to help my daughter who is constipated. She is only a month old and is having a really hard time passing her stool. I am just wondering if anyone knows if this helps with constipation? I sure hope so! I would love to help her out…and an end to the crying would be nice too.
After using Biogaia for 2-3 days – my 2 months old son started pooing more than he does. This was not too bad. But from 4th day, he was vomiting in addition to pooing more. 4th day he puked watery stuff(like 3 tsp). Next day he puked curd-like stuff 4 times(from 4 tsp to 1 tsp). These were diarhhoea like symptom although i had reduced the dosage from (prescribed) 5 drops to 3 drops already.
I stopped giving biogaia for now and he is better from last 2 days. He vomited only once (although he is feeling nausea like even now). I am giving Gripe water each time i feel he is not able to bear. He sometimes rejects Gripe water also. But is still much better than he was with Biogaia.
Is it possible seller had not kept it refrigerated properly which caused the bacteria to deteriorate??
Any guidance would be helpful.
thanks.
I have a 5 week old and have just started the bio gaia today of course it says that it will take a few days before it starts working. Does anyone know if you can give the bio gaia and the gripe water at the same time or will it cause some sort of reaction for baby.
Any info would help.
@pooja
that sound kind of like what is happening with my son. He seems to spit up more since biogaia. he also seems not to be pooping since i have given it to him. he was crying because of gas before and i didn’t want to kept giving him simethicone so his grandmother gave us biogaia. He really doesn’t seem to cry as much however his cry seem to be more intense when they happen and he isn’t really pooping. he used to do BIG seedy yellow poops everyday before biogaia and now they are almost skid marks in comparison. I am so distraught on what to do. should i stop the drops or should i continue?
[...] you have read my Bio Gaia post, then you already know that we had one fussy baby girl on our hands. As great as Bio Gaia [...]
