Once we discovered we were having a girl I immediately busied myself with one of my favourite activities – interior design! I found a lovely pair of spring green book ends that became my jumping off point for colour and quickly started searching for bedding. I quickly found myself disappointed. The patterns were either incredibly cutesy (something I was trying to avoid), were in the wrong colour or unbelievably expensive (I stupidly thought when I looked at one set that the $800 price tag was for the crib only to discover that’s how much the bedding set was!!!) Within two weeks I realised I was going to have to take the matter into my own hands and make the bedding I was looking for myself.

I quickly starting searching all our local fabric stores for nursery fabric, only to be disappointed once again. (Damn there are some ugly fabrics out there!) So I did what any good Spilt Milk Mom does in a crisis, I went on-line!  Three cheers for the tinterweb because I quickly discovered a treasure trove of tasteful fabrics at Nursery Fabrics.com.

Now there are several things about this site that made it an obvious favourite. First off they have already arranged their fabrics into colour combinations that work well together so if you’re looking for inspiration or ideas its a great place to start. Secondly, you can buy fabric swatches. I was really surprised by how many on-line fabric retailers didn’t do this. Why on earth would I buy fabric when I can’t see the actual dye lot colour in real life – computer screens aren’t exactly renowned for being colour correct. And finally, their customer service is fabulous. Once I had chosen all my swatches I went through to purchase and it wouldn’t let me enter a Canadian address, crestfallen I emailed them enquiring if there was any chance I could buy from them. I was phoned in about 15 minutes and kindly informed that they are be happy to ship to Canada and my order processed over the phone. (At the moment Canadian customers aren’t able to use the online form but you can call or email your information and they’ll process the order that way.)  In all ways I was impressed with this lovely company even before I received my swatches, but after seeing the quality of the fabrics and at affordable prices, I was completely sold.

All about: Emily:
Emily is very proud to be one of the Spilt Milk Moms ‘founding mothers’ as well as being Mama to “Little Miss” (who was born in August 2009) and Wifelet to her Husbando. She spent seven years living in London which helped her to develop a keen eye for amazing products from around the world. As an actress and producer, Emily ensured her place in hell with over 3 years in children’s advertising (her job was “to create want where there is no need!”) but looks to undo the damage by finding the best things around for mamas and little ones. Emily is always ready with fresh baking, a silly song, or a glass of chardonnay and is renowned for always being overdressed and having a killer collection of heels that she’s not afraid to wear (even whilst babywearing!).
