I was incredibly disappointed when we went for our 20 week ultrasound and we were unable to find out the baby’s sex because she kept her legs crossed the entire time. I had desperately wanted to know the gender and was devastated when we couldn’t find out (although I was obviously incredibly grateful that she was healthy). I knew that Spilt Milk Mom Trea had had a 3D ultrasound with her first child and had raved about the experience, so I was delighted when a work opportunity led to being offered two 3D ultrasounds from UC Baby (where Trea had her scan done, too).
It is very difficult to find the words to describe the experience of seeing your baby in 3D. I’ll never forget the moment when the image on the screen jumped from a black and white outline to a sepia-toned, fully formed image of our daughter’s face. She was really there – and had eyes and a nose and adorable little lips. It was such an incredible feeling of joy and love. We spent a while looking at her face, arms, and legs before the tech confirmed that our ‘it’ was really a ‘she’ (UC Baby provides a free rescan if the gender or face are hidden during your initial scan).
One of the other amazing benefits of UC Baby was the live broadcasting option – they can broadcast your session over the internet to up to four email addresses. We were able to share the scan with family and friends 5000 miles away in the UK, which was simply amazing. I know that they all absolutely loved being able to be a part of our pregnancy like that.
We had our first scan at 21 weeks and our second at almost 32 weeks, which to be honest was probably a bit too late. In our 2nd scan our daughter had her face squished up against the uterine wall the entire time, so while it was still a wonderful experience we didn’t get nearly as many great photos. If I did it over again I wouldn’t wait past 28/29 weeks to get the second sneak peak.
We had our scans at UC Baby’s Langley and Vancouver clinics (there are locations across Canada), and both were equally fabulous – amazing customer service and the techs were friendly, lovely, and patient.
I truly believe that having a 3D scan made us both feel incredibly connected to our daughter, but this is especially so for Husbando. Men don’t really get to experience much about pregnancy personally, and being able to see our little girl growing made him feel much more a part of the experience. The only downside for some people is the price: options range from $125 for gender determination to $300 for the Golden Package which includes two scans, printed photos and a CD of the scan to take away.
I can’t say enough good things about how wonderful we found 3D scans and company UC Baby to be – if you’re on the fence about whether to try it out or not, I highly recommend it.

Emily is very proud to be one of the Spilt Milk Moms ‘founding mothers’ as well as being Mama to “Little Miss” (who was born in August 2009) and Wifelet to her Husbando. She spent seven years living in London which helped her to develop a keen eye for amazing products from around the world. As an actress and producer, Emily ensured her place in hell with over 3 years in children’s advertising (her job was “to create want where there is no need!”) but looks to undo the damage by finding the best things around for mamas and little ones. Emily is always ready with fresh baking, a silly song, or a glass of chardonnay and is renowned for always being overdressed and having a killer collection of heels that she’s not afraid to wear (even whilst babywearing!). Your experience sounds very similar to ours. We had a scan at what we thought was 17w 5d, turns out it was actually 15w 2d, so we were unable to determine the gender. Like you, I was devastated! I so badly wanted to know the gender. Thankfully my doctor told me he would make sure that received another ultrasound at 32 weeks. The ultrasound tech was nice enough to flip on the 4D imaging for a few quick pictures. We were only able to see them in black and white, but WOW how amazing! I’ve never had the 4D before and I would highly recommend it. Oh, and we also got confirmation that our ‘it’ was a little girl
