Nutrios: The Better O

nutriosIf you have a toddler or know someone with a toddler, chances are you know what a wonderful snack oat ring cereals are (who am I kidding – you know I’m talking about Cheerios).  These types of cereals are not too messy, are easily transportable, and are fairly nutritious.  They are a million times better than my old favourite, Fruity Pebbles, but I have recently discovered a more favourable alternative to oat ring cereals: Heinz Nutrios.

I was first drawn to Nutrios when I heard that Cheerios are high in sodium.  Checking the labels of both cereals, I found that for a one cup serving Cheerios contains 190mg of sodium, while Nutrios only has 140mg per serving.  That difference is equivalent to the amount of sodium in half a cup of juice or a three ounce serving of chicken.  And when we’re talking about itty bitty bodies, that is a significant difference in the amount of sodium for me to switch.

Now Cheerios aren’t all bad.  One serving contains 10% of the daily recommened amounts of both vitamins A and C, neither of which are found in Nutrios.  So if you are interested in learning more I suggest you check those labels and find what works best for your family’s diet.  Of course this is best achieved if you leave the kids at home, grab a nice frothy latte, and peruse the aisles of your local grocery store at your leisure.  Isn’t it sad that going grocery shopping on my own sounds like a luxurios outing?!
