Moukisac Eco-Friendly Giveaway!

environmental shopping bag, moukisac

There are tonnes of shopping bag options out there – paper, plastic, those free promo ones I seem to collect as a hobby, the ones you buy because you like the print but then never use.  But the Moukisac (pictured above in Maraschino colour) is different.

I received my Moukisac as a gift, and I have to admit I tossed it aside at first because I thought it was just another eco-friendly shopping bag to add to my (already huge) collection.  Then one day I put it in my purse as I headed off to the store … and I’ve been using it ever since!  The Moukisac is way better than all those other bags – yes, it has all the standard features that re-usable bags usually have (it can be folded down into a minute parcel, it has shoulder length handles, it isn’t disposable … you know, the basics of Re-Usable Bags 101).  But here are the things that really make me appreciate this bag:

  • Moukisacs are 100% made in Canada.
  • They come in eight gorgeous colours.
  • The Moukisac is designed with an adjustable strap and clip so it can be used as a shoulder or sling bag or a waist pack when folded up.
  • When it comes to opening and re-folding the bag from and to its compact size, there are no hassles because it is super simple to do.
  • The best part – each Moukisac is a 6-in-1 system.  Not only do you get a re-usable shopping bag, but what is truly clever about this product are the four mesh bags that come with it.  Moukisac has taken into consideration not only the environmental impact of the plastic shopping bag, but also those bulk/fruit/veggie little clear plastic bags that are required to purchase loose nuts, apples, broccoli, and the like.  Moukinets are polyester mesh bags with a drawstring (four come with the purchase of a Moukisac – three large and one small), and they can be ordered separately from the Moukisac.  Moukinets are not only reusable, they are also easily cleaned, and I get comments and compliments on them at the checkout counter every time.

Many countries and cities around the world are currently imposing bans on plastic shopping bags, and with good reason (check out this interesting CBC article, Blowing in the Wind: Global Moves Against Shopping Bags).  According to the website Reusable Bags, it is estimated that each year up to 100 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide, most of which are disposed of as garbage (even with programs in place, only one to three percent of plastic shopping bags are actually recycled).  Plastic bags don’t biodegrade, but break down into toxins which contaminate the soil and waterways before making their way back into our food chain if they aren’t lethally ingested by marine life and other animals first.  Obviously, reducing your use of plastic shopping bags as much as possible is a solution, and purchasing a Moukisac will help you take that first step!

Moukisacs (which include four Moukinets) can be ordered online from the company’s website and from local retailers, including those listed here, starting at $29.50 CAD.  Moukinets come in packs of four in sizes ranging from Mini Pack to Jumbo Set starting from $12.50 CAD, or individually in various sizes starting at $3.50 CAD each.  Orders can also be shipped to the USA and internationally.

Lovely giveaway! My family and I use reusable shopping bags, recycle plastic bottles, use the least amount of water possible, energy star appliances, CF light bulbs, cloth diapers, cloth breast pads, and try to buy products with the least packaging.

  • Shannon

What a great product!! My family composts, uses material bags for shopping and use cloth diapers (line dry of course!!). Any little bit helps!

  • Those are really great products! We use energy efficient appliances, walk instead of using the car whenever possible, reuse rainwater, air dry clothes etc.

    Thanks for this great giveaway!

I really like the mesh bag(s) for produce and other items that require the smaller plastic bags. I also love that they are a local company (think globally, buy locally).

  • Nicole Plewis

I think the mesh bags are such a great feature. I have reusable bags that I put my groceries in, but it has struck me a number of times that I use the reusable big bags, but still put my produce in the plastic bags. These bags usually don’t get reused because I tear them up trying to get my produce out. But those mesh bags would solve that problem!!

  • Amy

I love how versatile this bag is and how many different ways it can be worn or utilized.

  • My favorite feature is that they are made from durable fine polyester mesh netting.

  • For the environment, and in an effort to raise our plastic-awareness, I am declaring Friday July 17 the first annual Buy No Food in Plastic Day. http://www.lowcrapdiet.com The world won’t change until we change it.

Moukisacs look like a great product! I use my cloth bags to hold loose fruit and veggies, but they are bulky for things like rice and nuts. Moukisacs would be helpful.

I refuse extra packaging on my purchases. I always take my own bags shopping. We try to grow most of our own produce, we recycle & compost.

  • dreamer

love how durable they are, but easy to bring with you. And I like the bright colors on the ties

  • I like that it is water resistant.

I like that the bags are machine washable and dryable.

My family uses cloth bags for groceries and most times I walk to the store with my toddler in the stroller. So we tend to pack as much as possible into the bottom of the stroller. I love the little mesh bags for produce since I either feel bad about the plastic, or don’t use a small bag at all and end up with limes or kiwis floating around in the stroller. Thanks for alerting me to this company!

  • We are mad composters and recyclers! We also have line dried our clothing for the last 3 years…not the easiest thing to do year round in Colorado.

I like the fact that all the little bags and the big bag come together, no more plastic baggies! Thanks!

  • Donna

We grow our own garden at home and we recycle paper at work.

  • Bunny

My family reuses and recycles everything we can in order to help the environment. Jars, plastic bags, cereal boxes and other containers find new life in our household after serving their original purpose. When they’re completely worn out, we recycle them!

  • I love that mesh bags are included! More than once I’ve brought my reusable bags and then realized that I’m still having to grab plastic bags for my fruits and veggies.

  • I really love the net bags. I take my own reuseable bags to the grocery store on a regular basis (and there’s always one in my purse for random purchases), but I still end up with a pile of those clear plastic veggie/fruit bags at the end of a trip. Net bags are a great idea!

  • I love that it’s a 6 in one sack. It can be small enough to just carry your keys and can expand to hold your groceries. We’ve been trying more and more to use reusable bags. I do use reusable sandwich and snack bags.

  • I really like that it is water resistant. I hate when my stuff get s wet.

  • mona b

I think it looks great. I would love to have one.

  • We compost or recycle pretty much everything, as much as we can anyway. Our local recycling facilities don’t accept some things and we do try to repurpose what we can’t recycle.

  • We started our own organic vegetable garden this year. It doesn’t get much more local than that! It was fairly inexpensive. Already we’ve had radishes, peas, strawberries and green onions out of the garden. Later this summer we’ll be eating zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, beets, garlic and beans! Yum!

My favortie feature of the Moukisac mesh bags is that you can also use them to hold and protect delicates in the wash cycle.

  • Infertileinthecity

I like the fact that they have those wee bags, how cool is that! I often feel bad for using the little plastic bags at the grocery store, seems so wasteful.

  • What fascinates me about this product are the mesh bags that come with the shopping bag. I have a ton of cloth shopping bags that get used regularly, and try to forgo the plastic produce bags whenever possible. But there is no way to buy bulk beans or nuts without a plastic bag! So I’m really interested to try some of the mesh bags and try to cut down on plastic bags even more.

My household does the usual recycling and re-using (I wash every plastic bag and re-use it!) but one of the things I’m most proud of is how I’ve gotten rid of pretty much every chemical cleaning product in the house. We’re down to laundry soap and dish washing detergent, and use Norwex microfiber cloths or the old standards of vinegar, baking soda, and elbow grease to get things clean. It is great knowing that the air inside our house is cleaner because of this and that the earth is not having to withstand yet another bunch of toxins getting flushed down my drains!

  • I’ve actually been keeping track of how much plastic I produce and it’s totally alarmed me. Produce bags are actually the biggest component of that plastic. So having re-usable produce bags would be great. I have a few but I keep forgetting them. So I think a system like this would be really, truly great to help me remember and use them.

  • Shelly

We try to buy local and take our own bags to all stores

  • Danielle E.

We recycle and use reusable containers. We take our own bags when shopping.

  • The mesh bags are such a great feature. We recycle and use reusable containers. We take our own bags when shopping.

  • We Freecycle things we don’t use anymore, if they’re not worn out.

  • I have been looking for some great produce bags. These look wonderful. That would definitely be my favorite feature. I like that you can see whats in the bags when you go to check out. We bring our own grocery bags to the store but have yet to find any great produce bags.

  • grams

I like the extra bags that come with it. I also try to remember to always take our own bags with me, but it seems they are never in the car when I need them. So I need bags for both cars. LOL

  • We’re teaching our son about the importance of recycling and cutting down on the waste we produce. I love that these bags are machine washable.

  • ooooh! i love it! my favourite part are the little bulk bags, so smart!

  • megan

I like the idea of not only being able to use them at the grocery store, but always a way to store your food at home.

  • We compost, hang our clothes out to dry, and pack waste-free school lunches

Great bags! My family recycles everything we can, uses a water pitcher, turns off lights whenever possible and we are teaching our 2-year-old the importance of taking care of our planet!

  • Laureen

Not sure if this giveaway ends EST or other, so I’m entering just in case…

My family does many things to help the earth. For one, we hang-dry all laundry. (We don’t even know if the dryer works…we’ve never used it since we moved in years ago.) Thanks!

My Moukinets arrived in the mail a few days ago, and I took them on their maiden voyage to the grocery store yesterday. I absolutely LOVE them. I have passionately hated those thin plastic bags in the produce aisle for years- even though I was reusing them, I couldn’t stand using that much plastic. My problem is solved with Moukinets. Ordering online was quick and painless, and my Moukinets arrived quickly by mail. The minimal packaging warmed my heart. Thanks for the great review!
