A Plateful Of Tradition

Birth16

The entire time I was growing up four of the above plates used to watch over us from their position on the stairs. I don’t know how old I was when I first noticed them but eventually I realised that each of the plates recorded the details of my sisters and my births. My father had been in the UK merchant navy when I was born and discovered the plates whilst on a stopover in Holland, my mom loved them and despite emigrating to Canada they sent home and had them made for my sisters. I love the traditional blue & white Delft china and really wanted to carry on the tradition with my own family but wasn’t sure if I would still be able to find them. Ahhh Tinterweb where would I be without you?

It didn’t take long before I found John Braat & Company who specialise in commemorative Delft china. The plates are available in 3 sizes (6, 8, 10 inches) and in two tiles (traditional blue and colour) and each plate is hand painted with the child’s name, weight, height, date of birth and place of birth – even the time of birth is recorded on the clock on the wall. One thing I really appreciate with John Braat & Company is that the colour of the hand-painted details match the actual Delft colour (I found numerous plates online that didn’t). These plates are a really unique, personalised keepsake and would make a lovely gift. (The company deliver to Canada, the US, UK, Europe and Australia.) Plates start at $54US and tiles at $44.kee

All about: Emily:
Emily is very proud to be one of the Spilt Milk Moms ‘founding mothers’ as well as being Mama to “Little Miss” (who was born in August 2009) and Wifelet to her Husbando. She spent seven years living in London which helped her to develop a keen eye for amazing products from around the world. As an actress and producer, Emily ensured her place in hell with over 3 years in children’s advertising (her job was “to create want where there is no need!”) but looks to undo the damage by finding the best things around for mamas and little ones. Emily is always ready with fresh baking, a silly song, or a glass of chardonnay and is renowned for always being overdressed and having a killer collection of heels that she’s not afraid to wear (even whilst babywearing!).
