Keeping The Girls Dry

Omaiki nursing pads

Among the many joys of motherhood is breastfeeding, but a necessary side effect is the need to prevent accidental (and embarrassing) leaks.  I have tried several different kinds of nursing pads and have finally found my favourites – Omaiki Ultimate Pads!  Compared to disposable pads, you can feel better about using these reusable ones, and they hardly take up any space in a wash that you undoubtedly do every few days anyway for the baby clothes.  I also find that disposable pads tended to stick to the nipples – not a pleasant sensation!

Having tried other reusable pads, Omaiki’s Ultimate Pads stand out for several reasons:
  • First, they are large.  Coverage is important, as pads tend to shift around as you move, so you want to be sure they don’t miss their target.
  • Second, they are incredibly soft.  The pad is made from three layers of bamboo viscose, and there is a layer of suedecloth on the innermost layer, which feels luxurious against the skin.  I have also tried wool reusable pads – and let’s just say wool is not the most comfortable fabric against this sensitive area.  The outermost layer of the Omaiki pad is a breathable laminate which keeps everything dry.
  • Third, they wash incredibly well.  Other reusable pads made of cotton or wool that I tried ended up bent out of shape, and the former do not dry as well.  The Omaiki pads retain their shape perfectly after multiple washes and dry very quickly.
  • Finally, the icing on the cake is that they are made by a Quebec company (that also makes reusable diapers), so I feel happy supporting a local business.
You can order these from various retailers or online; a list of vendors can be found here.  Omaiki Ultimate Pads retail for about $16 CAD for a package that includes two pairs of pads.  Happy nursing!
