At three years old my son is really into pirates, so when I spotted this Jolly Roger kite by HQ Kites and Designs USA I had to buy it for him. It wasn’t just that the kite was pirate-themed – I remember the countless hours my sister and I spent flying kites as kids and I really wanted to share this fun pastime with him.
If you haven’t flown a kite lately, then you’ve probably forgotten exactly how much fun it is (not to mention a great way to get moving!). We head out to the large field next to our local elementary school to fly our kite, and Oliver loves holding onto it for launching and yelling, “ONE TWO THREE FLY!” before letting go as it zips skyward. The colourful six long tails attached to the Jolly Roger (WAY longer than the image above shows) make a satisfying swoosh sound and Oliver enjoys chasing them as they float above him, trying to catch them.
The HQ Jolly Roger kite is a Single Line Delta Kite, which means that it only has one string and is suitable for flying in even light winds. The line is made of polyester with 200 feet of spool and the kite has a strong, fibreglass frame and polyester body measuring 137cm x 99cm. HQ Kites and Designs USA has rated this kite for ages five and up, but obviously parent supervision is essential any time kids go fly a kite.
I believe that every kid should own a kite, and quality ones like our Jolly Roger are reasonably priced – we purchased ours from the Great Canadian Kite Company for $27 CAD, but you can also purchase this kite through the following dealers near you. Now go fly a kite!
