A few months after my son was born, I received a package in the mail for him from some dear friends in Boston. I was delighted when I saw the adorable sock monkey inside! This monkey is handmade by Jan of Monkey Shine Studio in Massachusetts, and all materials are made in the USA.
My son took to his monkey immediately; within a few seconds he was sucking happily on the ear. This monkey’s appendages are the perfect size for baby’s investigative mouth, and the long arms and legs are great for baby’s hand manipulations. The friendly smile on the monkey’s face makes even my extremely serious baby smile! Now my son has full “conversations” with his monkey in his crib, and I can tell it’s one of his favourite pals.
There are two collections of monkeys to choose from on the Monkey Shine Studio’s website. All are made from extremely bold and bright colourful fabrics, and each one has a cute story to describe its history and/or personality (my sons’ is the one pictured, “Little Bear”, described as “relaxed and happy, sincere and lazy” on the website). If you do not like the ready-made monkeys, custom orders are also available, made from any new pair of socks. Other items that can be purchased are T-shirts, greeting cards, bumper stickers and onesies, all with photos or sketches of the adorable monkeys. A monkey makes a great gift; they can be purchased from the website for $42.95USD plus shipping and handling.
