Canadian company Bummis was kind enough to send me one of their Swimmi Baby Swimsuit swim diapers to try out on my ten month old, Charlotte. The timing was perfect, because not only is it summer and we have plans to spend as much time in the water (pools, lakes, and the ocean) as possible, but we’re in the middle of her very first Water Babies swim lessons. Even though I don’t use cloth diapers, I have been wanting to try a non-disposable swim diaper for a while now, and after seeing Bummis’ version in all of my favourite children’s boutiques (not to mention that the Swimmi is an iParent Media “Hot” Award Winner) I knew the this was the swim diaper I wanted to try.
When I showed my husband the Swimmi, he admitted that he wasn’t too excited about the prospect of cleaning up baby poop in a reusable diaper (I still don’t see what the big deal is). I was more worried about whether or not the this swim diaper could contain any potential ‘messy’ situations, especially after my husband, a teacher, took his class swimming last month and the pool had to be evacuated because someone pooped in the water (apparently that happens at least once a week). Even though Charlotte has yet to poo in her Swimmi, I’m not even concerned that I would be the embarrassed parent whose kid pooped in the pool and killed the fun for everyone. Besides its excellent fit, the Swimmi has a coated nylon layer sandwiched between the funky exterior print and an interior polyester mesh that make it obvious that potential leaking/spills/floaters will be avoided. Should you share my husband’s fear of poop in a reusable diaper and a self-contained mess does occur, flush any remaining poop down the toilet, rinse the garment out, and follow the laundering instructions for washing and drying (low heat and no fabric softeners).
Made in Montreal, the Bummis Swimmi is incredibly well-made and is super soft, including the edging which is made out of stretchy Lycra. It also has an excellent adjustable fit thanks to the two hook and loop closures. Swimmis are available in five prints including Pizzazz, Turtles, Fishies, Clownfish, and limited addition print Bubbles, and it’s up to you whether or not you want to use it as your child’s swimsuit or underneath whatever swimwear you prefer. Available in three sizes fitting children from birth to 24 months (Small 9-15 pounds, Medium 15-22 pounds, and Large 22-30 pounds), the Swimmi is reasonably priced at about $13.50 USD/CAD at these local and online retailers. Even if you don’t use cloth diapers, you should consider Bummis’ reusable Swimmi Baby Swimsuit. Not only will the environment thank you, but so will your wallet!
