I am always on the lookout for chemically-free hair and skin products to use on my son, so when I was offered the opportunity to try out Canadian company hairykids’ line of natural products, I jumped at the chance. This small Saltspring Island company produces a line of shampoos, conditioners, body washes/bubble bath, and styling gels that are all natural and safe to use on kids (if you don’t think your family should be using natural hair and body care products, have a look at this list of harmful chemical additives found in most commercially produced products on the market and you will be convinced!). Made in small batches, hairykids products are fair trade, not tested on animals, scented using essential oils (instead of fragrances), and preserved using natural ingredients. All of the products are biodegradable, and the bottles in which they are stored are recyclable.
hairykids’ fabulous products are available in four different scents: Lemonade (oily to normal hair); Seaside (normal to dry hair); Tropical (all hair types); and Unscented for those with extra-sensitive skin (appropriate for all hair types). The company was kind enough to send me samples of the shampoos, conditioners, body washes/bubble bath, in each of their lines, and a full-sized bottle of the styling gel in Lemonade. I have had a great time trying these products out on my son over the last few weeks. I even got his hair cut so that I could style it in a faux hawk using the hair gel! I have to say that I have been really pleased with the entire line – hairykids shampoos sud and rinse with ease, their conditioners leave my son’s hair incredibly soft, the body wash/bubble bath works well and produces lots of bubbles, and the styling gel gives him great spiked hairdos. I even tried some out on myself, and found the scents to be pleasant and not over-powering (the Lemonade scented products are our family’s favorite!).
I feel great using hairykids products to make sure that my little guy is squeaky clean and looking sharp, but the most important part for me is that I can relax knowing that I am also using all natural, environmentally-friendly products on him. hairykids products are available for purchase through the company’s website as well as from the following retailers. A bottle of the company’s styling gel (sold in 125ml bottles) costs $12 CAD, while the shampoos, conditioners, and body washes / bubble bath (sold in 250ml bottles) cost $17 CAD (buy a Family Pack for $49 CAD, which includes one of each of these products, and save $14). While hairykids’ hair and body products are a little pricier than other products out there, the high quality, safe, and natural ingredients and the resulting peace of mind I get from using these products on my son are well worth the extra cost.

My daughter’s favorite hair product is cream cheese. She really smears it in good. Nice staying power, but I think the Hairy Kids lemonade products would smell much better.

i would like the unscented, as I dont care too much for scents. My 4 month old has a lot of unruly curls that he got from his father…..I may even need some gel for them!!!

My only hair problem with my baby is spit up…..I HATE the smell of old rotten breast milk!!! Unscented once again, would be my choice!

I would love to try the tropical line! When i was a kid i had gum stuck in my hair and had to get it cut. I can’t believe they still don’t make something that gets that stuff out!
The Tropical Bubble Bath / Body Wash sounds lovely! A memorable kid hair experience I have is when I cut my 2/3 year old sister’s hair when I was a child (I was maybe 5 or 6 at the time). My mom wasn’t happy but I think I did a pretty good job!
A few months ago I let my grandson eat an ice cream cone (he was 2). Not a problem, but it was in the backseat of my car on the way to my house. What a mess! Could have used the Lemonade body wash to clean him up …

I would love to try Lemonade Styling Gell for my daughter who is almost 6 and just this year got her hair! That is what is so memorable about her – she had/has alot of gut issues and so her hair has just not grown in but she took it in stride, she litteraly was bald untill she was three, then she got sprigs, and now she has shoulder length beautiful curls- she is SO proud of her hair, and she has earned it! She wears clips and my mouse in it to amplipfy the curls LOL, she takes good care of that pretty, hard earned hair of hers.
I really would love to win the gift pack – I want to try it for myself! I have this lick of hair that sticks up like a parakeet … the styling gel might help.
