Really, it’s true! My son has several black onesies and t-shirts, but my favorite is one that says, “Mother Sucker.” And, just like the baby in the book Urban Babies Wear Black, he goes for jogs and appreciates fine dining!
I stumbled across this board book at a second hand baby store, and after glancing through it, I knew I had to have it. This fun little book, written by Canadian author Michelle Sinclair Colman, starts each page with “Urban babies like to …” then fills in various things we do in the city. She takes a look at living, and loving, life in the city as a baby. The whimsical illustrations by Nathalie Dion really add to the simple text on each page.
When researching Urban Babies Wear Black, I was surprised to see that a few people did not like the book (it is very apparent tongue-in-cheek humour) and some people were even offended!?! My opinion is that Sinclair Coleman isn’t trying to be disrespectful, she’s simply showing a modern view of what some babies might do, depending on where they’re from.
After I bought the book, I wondered if there were more in the series and I wasn’t disappointed. There are currently eight books in the series, as well as a new baby journal for moms to keep a record of pregnant life and beyond. This would be such a fun book to give as a shower gift for the new parents!
I want to get each book in the series, because although T-dog was born a city kid, he also composts like the Eco Baby; wears jeans like the Rocker Baby; rises at dawn like the Country Baby; and browses farmers’ markets like the Foodie Baby! To be honest, he identifies with some aspect of all of the books, much like your child will as well, I’m sure.
The books retail for around $6.95 USD on Amazon, and $8 CAD on Chapters. You can also buy the token Urban babies onesie or t-shirt for $24USD off the Urban Babies Wear Black website.

Great series!
Our local library has Jet Set Babies wear Wings. I should check the rest out.
