“He shoots, He scores!” My husband, Yuji, is an avid hockey fan, and those words never fail to excite him. Not a week goes by that Yuji doesn’t play, attend a game or watch one on T.V. So, when I learned I was pregnant, it was my hope my child-to-be would share his dad’s passion. [...]
Courtesy of US company timi & leslie, I recently received a Mackenzie 2-in-1 Backpack diaper bag to put to the test. It arrived just in time for my two stopover solo trip to Florida with my 22 month old son, Koji, and so from thirty thousand feet, I can figuratively and literally state that this bag flies above the rest on function, comfort, design and security! Most full-sized diaper bags share the same basic features such as room for diapers, wipes, a spare change of clothes, two bottles, and extra compartments for a cell phone, wallet, keys, diaper creams, thermometer, little toys and other small must haves, as well as a changing pad. The Mackenzie 2-in-1 Backpack includes all of these features, but also offers additional features I really appreciate. [...]
Recently our family relocated from a small one bedroom and den apartment in East Vancouver to a spacious three bedroom townhouse in Ladner. As soon as we moved in the renovating and remodeling began. My son’s room was the one room I had a clear picture of how it should look. I wanted his room to have a transportation theme with one wall sporting a chalkboard silhouette of a town. I came up with the idea of a chalkboard from my mom who is the author of “Projection Stencilling” and “Projection Stencilling for Kids”. Regardless of talent or lack thereof, anyone can create wonderful works of art by following the simple step-by-step instructions in my mom’s books. In less than half a day my mom and I had my son’s wall completed. Despite the work that still needs to be done I love showing people through our new house. But I get most excited when we reach my son’s room. Everyone has loved the mural and has expressed disbelief when I say how fast and easy it was to do. Kids love drawing on it as do adults.

A few weeks ago, while visiting my brother’s family, my three and a half year old nephew treated me to an enthusiastic demonstration of his new Twilight Turtle by cloud b. After receiving such an enthusiastic endorsement, I wanted to see if my son shared the same excitement.
The Twilight Turtle is designed to be [...]
“Waa, Waa, Waa”, my son, Koji, would wail inconsolably when his favorite toy went missing. Well, with his new Plush Animal Backpack from US company Chase’s Treasures, it is “Waa!” no more in our household. Gone are the days of desperately searching for the beloved stuffed toy my child could not possibly live without. The need for me to retrace footprints, post ads in the Lost and Found section of Craigslist, or plaster my neighbourhood with posters is gone. Now that he has his lion Plush Animal Backpack, my son is able to keep his furry friend safe and at hand in an outside pouch designed just for this accommodation. Time for a play date or a cuddle? No problem – the furry friend can be easily removed from the backpack. As an added bonus, each animal has a zipper on its back and the space can be used to store small treasures. Plush Animal Backpacks have adjustable arm straps and easy-to-open and close zippers, and I especially love that the stuffed animal is extremely soft (as is the backpack itself). Because these Chase’s Treasures backpacks are available in a variety of plush animals and colours, there is bond to be one for your special little person. [...]
For those of you who have last minute shopping for the little ones on your list, I have some great book ideas. Raincoast Books was kind enough to send three books for my son, Koji, to try out. The first was “In My Forest” by Sara Gillingham and Lorena Siminovich. My son, who is nineteen months old, loved this board book. It is a toy and a story all in one. A little deer finger puppet leads adventures into the forest. With a combination of bright, fun illustrations and a finger puppet, the book held my son captive. This book is part of a series which includes “In My Pond”, “In My Nest”, “In My Den”, “In My Tree”, “In My Patch” and two books we have already reviewed, “In My Meadow” and “In My Flower”.

With Christmas fast approaching I was in need of some thoughtful and unique gifts. You know that feeling you get when you buy a gift and you just can’t wait to see the expression on the person’s face when she opens it? Well, that’s just what I was looking for and what I found when I stumbled across 2unique, a Vancouver company specializing in hand stamped jewelry. It creates one of a kind costumed sterling silver necklaces. Each piece is handcrafted with one person in mind, making the jewelry a very personal gift. Custom options include choices of a variety of sterling silver shapes and sizes to be stamped. Once this selection has been made, the silver can be personalized with names, initials, dates, swarkoski crystal birthstones and pearls. Chains are available in link or ball and come in sizes from 16 to 26 inches in length. The resulting work of art is a meaningful keepsake for a mother, bride, newlywed, grandma, grad, a birthday girl, or just to celebrate the wearer. [...]

Since we are fully engulfed in the heat of the summer, I feel obligated to tell you about the amazing sun hat my son was recently given. It is called a Grow-with-me Sun Hat designed by the local Vancouver company, Twinklebelle. My friend was so impressed with the hat that, when she was in the market for the next size for her son, she bought one for mine too. I didn’t realize how wonderful a product it was, until we tried it for ourselves. She was right and we LOVE it! [...]
I am always on the lookout for chemically free hair and skin products to use on my son. When, I was offered the opportuity to sample and review Hairykids, I jumped at the chance. Recently my husband and I splurged and purchased a Nespresso machine. We figured that good coffee and raising a child go hand in hand. I had been introduced to one a few weeks prior, by a friend who had expressed her love for her machine. She was so fond of it, she had taken it with her when she last went on a trip to Seattle. I decided, if my friend couldn’t be away from her coffee maker for a night, it must be good. I was right and lucky for me, it wasn’t hard to convince my husband. This would be a fabulous gift for Father’s Day. My husband loves ours.

I was first introduced to the PeaPod travel beds by KidCo by my ninety year old grandma. When Koji was a month old, I was planning a trip to my parents and was searching for something for him to sleep in. I was not crazy about the idea of lugging around a heavy play pen. My grandma suggested I get him a small tent she had seen a relative use for her twins. She didn’t know what they were called but, after a short search on the internet, I found the PeaPod. It was advertised as being lightweight, compact and easy to use. I decided it would fit the bill and I rushed out and bought one. [...]
I am so pleased with the Peltor Kids ear muffs I bought for my son (that’s him above)! Several months ago, I was home with my baby boy when the fire alarm went off in our building. I was completely terrified and unprepared – the loud noise took me off guard and sent me into a panic. My son had the look of shear terror and cried for the entire length of the alarm (which seemed to last an eternity!). In my fury to try and grab jackets, keys, the diaper bag while attempting to calm myself and my son, I thought about how the process could have been much less frightening. It occurred to me that my son needed something to dull the noise and protect his ears in situations of excessive noise, and a few days later I bought him a pair of Peltor Kid ear muffs. I have them in an easily accessible area, in case another fire alarm happens, and in the meantime my son has had several opportunities to wear them. [...]
