I am always on the lookout for chemically free hair and skin products to use on my son. When, I was offered the opportuity to sample and review Hairykids, I jumped at the chance. Hiarykids is a company own by two sisters that live on Saltspring Island. They produce a line of shampoos, conditioners, bodywash/ bubble bath and styling gels that are all natural and safe to use on kids. They are free of dyes, fragrance, paraben, gmo, and sodium lauryl sulfate. All of their products are fair trade, not tested on animals and preserved with all natural ingredients. They are scented using essential oils. The products are also biodegratable and the bottles they are stored in are recyclable. [...]
Do you ever get frustrated when you hear about yet another kid product recall? Do you, like me, wish that there was somewhere you could go and check on the safety & green-ness of a product BEFORE you spent the money? Well how cool is this – Green Parents’ List does exactly that (and hooray its Canadian!) [...]
Yes, it’s still July, and yes, the beginning of the school year is still five or so weeks away. But time flies when you’re having fun, and for some reason especially when it’s summer. For those of you Back-to-School planning ahead of time, boy do we have a giveaway for you! Mabel’s Labels was kind enough to sponsor another giveaway with the Spilt Milk Moms, and here’s what’s up for grabs: Colourful Ultimate Back-to-School Combo! [...]
We recently ran a contest to try out a new Broody Chick product: Bug Be Gone. Twelve lucky contest winners and I got a free bottle of Broody Chick’s Bug Be Gone lotion to test out and give their feedback. Overall the lotion was very well received in terms of keeping the bugs away. Everyone that tried it said that they had no, or very few bug bites, after using the lotion. I went on an overnight camping trip with several teachers, and we all thought that it worked very well at keeping the mosquitoes away provided you reapplied the lotion after an hour or so. [...]
Let me preface this by stating that I hate sunscreen. I hate needing to remember to put it on, and now I also have to remember to put it on my son. I hate the chemical-ness and questionable ingredients of most sunscreens. I hate having to smear the cream in hard-to-reach places like my back. But – I have managed to find a sunscreen that I don’t mind – correction, that I almost look forward to – smearing on myself and my son: Matter Company’s Natural Sun Care Creme! [...]
Canadian company Bummis was kind enough to send me one of their Swimmi Baby Swimsuit swim diapers to try out on my ten month old, Charlotte. The timing was perfect, because not only is it summer and we have plans to spend as much time in the water (pools, lakes, and the ocean) as possible, but [...]
Canada 123 (written by Kim Bellefontaine and illustrated by Per-Henrik Gürth) is clearly one of my son’s favourites. This is a colourful counting board book for little ones with a very patriotic feel! [...]
Motherhood makes for busy days. So busy that at times I find myself craving simplicity. Which is why I was so excited to find Hank&Cheef, a fabulous Canadian company that has reminded me there can’t be anything simpler than a hanky. Don’t worry- these aren’t your grandpa’s hankies! Hank&Cheef’s gorgeous and colourful handkerchiefs come in a variety of designs, from robots to snails, and they truly are works of art. Hank&Cheef was kind enough to send me a three-pack of their beautiful owl hankies to try out on my guinea pigs… er… boys. Thanks Hank&Cheef!

As a stay-at-home-mother of two, I don’t have as much opportunity to pamper myself as I would like. Since my time is limited, I rarely spend a lot of time doing my nails or having long bubble baths, so I like to splurge where I can on the few bath and beauty products I do have time to use. I recently treated myself to some of the Principessa Beauty hair care line. [...]
I find dads incredibly hard to buy for – they either buy themselves whatever they want or you’ve already gone down that “hobby” road so many times you’re bored of it (and probably stumped for ideas!)
How about something completely different – how about something that puts dad more in the picture, shall we say?
Family photo sessions are once again gaining in popularity and affordability. Gone are the cheesy backgrounds (who remembers a bridge in a park with autumn leaves?) and forced poses (a la Awkward Family Photos), today’s sessions are more playful, inclusive and, for the most part, more natural.
Most local retailers (as well as baby fairs and swaps) will be able to highlight the photographers in your area, and of course the tinterweb is a great resource as it let’s you check out more of a photographer’s style and look.
A photo session for dad with the kid(s) is a great opportunity to capture some of that dad magic and provide memories for years to come. [...]
