Quinoa is extremely versatile, yet I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it – that is, until I came across the website, and later the cookbook, Quinoa 365 (by Patricia Green and Carolyn Hemming, Canadians no less!). This cookbook has recipes for using quinoa for breakfast foods to desserts – who knew? [...]
Ah, Winter! There are many super great finds out there to help you combat this chilly season, and we thought that we’d remind you about a few of our favourite winter things …. [...]
As a girl from Alaska living in Canada, I appreciate a cool toque. Between my husband and I and our four boys we have more toques than you can shake a stick at. I’ve been known to make fun of those moms who wear pyjama pants to drop their kids off at school. I should probably stop. Once toque-wearing weather hits, I find myself regularly pushing the limits as to how long one can go without washing one’s hair. Thanks to my toque, nobody’s the wiser. Or so I like to believe. I bet those pyjama-pants-wearing moms at least wash their hair. Anyhoo, when my sister called to tell me about Pook Toques, I had to have one. Thanks for sending me one to try out Pook! [...]
Tis the season where everything is a reason for celebrating.
This year we decided to team up with The Beer Wrangler and suggest some interesting beers and ales for you to try over the holidays. Most of these beers are based on traditional recipes that have been around for ages and basically fall into two categories – winter warmers or spiced Christmas beers. Winter warmers are rich, malty and stronger than your average beer (5.5 – 7%) while spiced Christmas beers can be of any style but that has also had sweet spices added (nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, allspice), they too are stronger than average in alcohol content (5.5 – 10%).
These beers would make great gifts for those hard to buy men (and women – women are now the fastest growing demographic of beer drinkers) so this year why not try a few and have your very own Christmas beeracle! [...]
For those of us who get a head-start on gift-giving for the holidays because we celebrate Channukah, it can be a bit harder to find that perfect gift for kids that doesn’t scream holiday kitsch. Luckily there is a time-tested classic that entertained ME as a kid that will hopefully entertain yours – a little CD called Latkes and Hamentashen by the talented and Canadian Fran Avni. [...]
With Christmas fast approaching I was in need of some thoughtful and unique gifts. You know that feeling you get when you buy a gift and you just can’t wait to see the expression on the person’s face when she opens it? Well, that’s just what I was looking for and what I found when I stumbled across 2unique, a Vancouver company specializing in hand stamped jewelry. It creates one of a kind costumed sterling silver necklaces. Each piece is handcrafted with one person in mind, making the jewelry a very personal gift. Custom options include choices of a variety of sterling silver shapes and sizes to be stamped. Once this selection has been made, the silver can be personalized with names, initials, dates, swarkoski crystal birthstones and pearls. Chains are available in link or ball and come in sizes from 16 to 26 inches in length. The resulting work of art is a meaningful keepsake for a mother, bride, newlywed, grandma, grad, a birthday girl, or just to celebrate the wearer. [...]
Prince Hayden MacCheeky is a real little prince, who also happens to be a royal little pest, as well as the star of the MacCheeky series of books for kids. There are currently two books in the series: A Royal Little Pest and A Royal Little Pest: Mine!.
The stories follow Prince Hayden MacCheeky as [...]
How much do we love Canadian company Broody Chick? A whole lot because not only are they a local company that aims to create environmentally friendly products that are good for the whole family, including those with sensitive skin, but once again they are pairing up with us to do another fantastic giveaway! [...]
Mama Zone generously sent me a package of their Eco-diapers by Moltex to put to the test on my 13 month old daughter a few weeks ago. I was intrigued about what was different about this disposable diaper – how can a company use the term Eco-responsible in the same sentence as the word diaper? [...]
I stumbled across Canadian company BabyBoo’s unique bamboo baby hats at a local boutique a few months ago, and Olga, the company’s founder, was lovely enough to send me one for Charlotte to try out (it arrived in a beautiful envelope adorned with ribbon and the company’s tag). Here’s the deal, though – BabyBoo’s hats are no ordinary hats. [...]
We have a Christmas Eve tradition in our family: the boys get to open one present from Grandma, and it’s always a brand new pair of pajamas to wear to bed. For the last few years, the boys were lucky enough to receive Hatley pajamas on Christmas Eve. I love looking back at our Christmas morning photos of the boys all decked out in their new jammies! Hatley clothes are designed to last, are made with natural fibers, and are just plain cute. The nature-inspired prints, like the Creepy Bugs print pictured above are my favourite! I have four boys and I know that the Hatley pajamas worn by my oldest son will eventually land in my youngest son’s drawer. I love that. [...]
If you’ve read my past reviews, you’ve probably noticed a common theme with me: a desire to find cool clothing for boys! Not to disappoint, Fig Kids is a Canadian clothing line based in Vancouver made from 95% super soft organic cotton blended with 5% lycra. They have both a boys and girls clothing line, and their products go up to size 8! [...]
I can’t begin to tell you how happy I am with my new 2011 Organized Family calendar by Canadian company Glow Baby, but let me try! Gone are the days of missed appointments and forgotten play dates. This calendar keeps the entire family organized. [...]
It can be very tricky finding the right clothes to wear once baby is born; you’re not feeling your most beautiful and you also require functionality and privacy for the times you are nursing in the company of others. Finally I was lucky enough to receive a nursing top from Momzelle – and how I wished I had this top from the beginning! [...]
Like it or not, cold and flu season is around the corner. With the kids in daycare and school well under way, I’m preparing myself for the onslaught of illness that is inevitably headed my family’s way thanks to our mini germ collectors and spreaders. This year, though, I’m combating cold and flu season the natural way with Homeocan’s Kids 0-9 line of natural homeopathic products for children. [...]
