My mother-in-law is a terrible worrier so when she heard about a baby monitor that could tell you if your child stopped breathing there was no way we were going to use anything other than the Angelcare Monitor. How it works is you place the Sensor Pad under the crib mattress (it needs to be on a solid piece rather than the slats), plug it into the main unit and if your child stops moving or breathing an alarm will sound within 20 seconds. [...] Several years ago when Husbando and I got married we were fortunate to have friends from all over the world join us to celebrate. It was fabulous to see them all and between them they took over 2000 photos of the nuptials, which lent us a problem – how did we coordinate pulling together all of those photos (in as high a quality as possible) from all those different locations into one (safe) place? I was at a loss until someone suggested Shutterfly. It was brilliant – not only could everyone log on to look at the photos from anywhere – they could also upload their own photos in a jiffy AND we could order CD containing all the high res images so we would have a back up of ALL the photos and could print them whenever we liked. Seriously awesome! [...] My daughter is the messiest eater out of all the children we know. It is not unusual to find food remains on everything (and everyone) in a two to three foot radius after one of her meals. Cleaning the floor three times a day got old real quick so I went on a hunt for a splashmat and I was thrilled that the lovely folks at Mimi the Sardine offered to send me one of their lovely splashmats in the Jungle print (above). [...] Several months ago we received an email pitch asking us if we’d like to review a pair of diamond earrings. Ummmm hell yeah? Now I’ll be honest, I knew the earrings weren’t real diamonds so I wasn’t exactly expecting much but when they arrived I was very pleasantly surprised. The earrings are square, 5mm, cubic zirconia studs set in 925 silver and the way they’re set (up higher in the setting as shown below) make them very sparkly and very real looking. (I actually had two different people compliment me on the earrings and both of them thought they were real.) Now we’re going to share some of our other “Best of the Web” discoveries to help you have the spookiest happy Halloween yet! [...] I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it or not, but last month we moved our family from an insanely spacious 3000 sq/ft house to a “make the best of it” 900 sq/ft apartment. It hasn’t been an easy transition and for a while it looked like we were living in a furniture warehouse. So in order to try and make the most of the space we have, I decided to become the Queen of storage solutions. I have absolutely fallen in love with the Kangaroom Wally Wall Organizer and I couldn’t wait to share it with you all. [...] I recently lost ran out of Maisie’s name labels before I had a chance to finish labelling everything so when Emily Press labels offered to send me their limited edition First Class School Label Pack I was stoked! [...] It was Little Miss’ first birthday last weekend (sniff sniff) and I was SO excited about throwing her her very own party. When I was in the UK last March I fell in love with some Very Hungry Caterpillar party decorations and thus inspired decided then and there that it would be the theme of her party. We ADORE the book by Eric Carle (if you don’t have it you must get it – it truly is one of those “must have” kids books) and thought the primary colours would be fun. I was a little unsure what to do about a cake until I stumbled upon the truly AMAZING Coco Cakes Cupcakes blog by local Vancouverite, and owner of Coco Cakes, Lyndsay Sung. Not only did Lyndsay create a fabulous Hungry Caterpillar cupcake train but she was sweet enough to explain how she did it in the comments (right down to which colour gels she used to get the “watercolour” look of the books). [...] Do you ever get frustrated when you hear about yet another kid product recall? Do you, like me, wish that there was somewhere you could go and check on the safety & green-ness of a product BEFORE you spent the money? Well how cool is this – Green Parents’ List does exactly that (and hooray its Canadian!) [...] Both Husbando and I are avid readers and we are desperate to pass on our love of books to Little Miss. We’ve been reading to her regularly since she was born and a couple of weeks ago we discovered her sitting on the floor, surrounded by her books, “reading” to herself (with an upside down book). Her favourite book, hands down, to either “read” or to have read to her, is Look – There’s a Baby by Emma Dodd. Each page of this board book features a different illustration of a baby, and the story is told in rhyme (Look there’s a baby who’s dressed and ready, look there’s a baby who’s cuddling teddy…) until on the last page there is a little “mirror” and the line “Look there’s a baby who looks like you!” That “surprise mirror ending” as the cover proclaims is guaranteed to make Little Miss smile with delight and pause only long enough to sign “more” and read the book all over again! [...] When I was 17 my father was diagnosed with a very serious form of skin cancer. He’s ok now (after some aggressive surgery) but I’ve never forgotten how scary that time was and how deadly skin cancer can be. So you can probably guess my stress level when I gave birth to a blue-eyed red head with alabaster skin. We live in sunscreen (and hats) in our house! This summer I’ve been using two different brands: Tru Kid and Baby Blanket, here are my thoughts on both of them. [...]  I find dads incredibly hard to buy for – they either buy themselves whatever they want or you’ve already gone down that “hobby” road so many times you’re bored of it (and probably stumped for ideas!) How about something completely different – how about something that puts dad more in the picture, shall we say? Family photo sessions are once again gaining in popularity and affordability. Gone are the cheesy backgrounds (who remembers a bridge in a park with autumn leaves?) and forced poses (a la Awkward Family Photos), today’s sessions are more playful, inclusive and, for the most part, more natural. Most local retailers (as well as baby fairs and swaps) will be able to highlight the photographers in your area, and of course the tinterweb is a great resource as it let’s you check out more of a photographer’s style and look. A photo session for dad with the kid(s) is a great opportunity to capture some of that dad magic and provide memories for years to come. [...] One of my favourite things about travelling is the search for products and ideas we don’t have here at home. I was in the UK last March and I fell in love with the absolutely gorgeous and colourful kitcehnware by London design darlings Joseph Joseph. When I got home I immeadiately contacted them to find out where I could get my hands on them and I was very kindly sent the nesting bowls (above) and the Index Chopping Boards (below). [...]
