Measuring the height of my son is, for me, one of the great pleasures of parenting. It’s kind of like a measurement of how I’m doing as a mom to see that he is growing well, is healthy and happy, and that all the sleep interruptions are worth it. Continuing on with the love-fest between my son and books – I’m always looking out for his next obsession. I find the best place to learn about great books is at my friends’ homes (those with kids, that is). This is exactly how I found out about the adorable and endearing book Where is the Green Sheep by Australian authors Mem Fox and Judy Horacek. [...] When Canadian company Silkberry Baby told me they would send me one of their gorgeous Toddler Comforters with removable filling in Pink Sheep to review, I was delighted. I insist on having quality, luxurious sheets on my bed, and my curiosity was piqued about Silkberry Baby’s quality, all-natural Eco-bedding for children. [...] Here at Spilt Milk Moms we are always looking for cool new products. But sometimes, as I evaluate the overflowing storage bins of toys in my house which my son intermittently plays with anyway, I wonder if we can just make do with what’s around the house. Hence this review, of the “non-toy” toys that may be lurking around your house, or ideas for common items that can spur the imagination. [...] My son Quinn recently turned seven. When my husband and I made our pilgrimage to our favourite toy store, I was determined to find Quinn a toy that would challenge him, did not require batteries, and would would be fun to play with alone or with others. The first toy we saw when we talked into the toy store was Perplexus (some may call it destiny- I prefer to think of it as clever retail display tactics). As I picked up the box to try to figure out what it was, the shop owner explained that it was voted one of Parents magazine Top Toys of 2010, and they had been having trouble keeping it on the shelves. I was intrigued. [...] Remember back in the day when the hospital would give newborn babies little beaded bracelets in pink and blue with their names on them? Well, you probably don’t remember, but our parents sure do. My mother still shows me mine every once in a while. They’re cute reminders of days gone by to be sure, and [...] I’m going to start this review by saying I have an incredibly rubbish immune system. I get every cold, flu, sniffle, cough – I swear I get sick even if I even watch a tv show about sick people. My husband (who never gets sick) is always making fun of how often I’m sick. Which is probably why, last month when he and Little Miss came down with the pre-Christmas bug, he was seriously shocked – I DIDN’T GET SICK. I know. Freaky right? [...] I currently am having a very difficult time getting Travis to eat anything that isn’t toast with butter, or bananas! You wouldn’t think that I would be having such a hard time given that his first solid food was broccoli, and he loved it! But alas, he has gone from super eater to super picky, so when I saw a bag of Ripe Kamoo Bars for sale from local company, Ripe Baby Food, I thought, “What have I got to lose?” Turns out, I needn’t have worried!! [...] Another Spilt Milk Dad review! … Regardless, it needed to be done. So down to the garage I went to grab the box of safety equipment. Electrical outlet caps … check. Baby gates … check. Corner guards … check. Cabinet/drawer locks … check. Door knob covers … check. Velcro straps … check. Duct tape … check. And one of my favorites … Patrull door stops from Ikea … check. Wait, I meant uncheck. As if I needed a reason to go to Ikea – where else can you get 50 cent hot dogs, 15 Swedish meatballs with mash potatoes for under $3 Monday to Thursday from 11am to closing (for a limited time), and breakfast for $1 before 11am? If you time it just right, you can have a three course meal for $3.50 (excluding HST of course). Now, back to those door stops …. [...] I try to do my part in this world to reduce the amount of waste my family creates. Over the last few years, this has included asking retail staff not to staple my receipts together (or print one at all). Staples are great at holding paper together, but what a hassle when it comes to pulling them off paper before recycling. In the big scheme of things, however, it wasn’t until I received a fabulous EcoStapler from my friend Lara last Christmas that I realized just how wasteful staples really are (and that doing my recycling properly was actually the least of my worries when it comes to these little steel fasteners). For example, did you know that if every office worker used one less staple per day, we’d conserve more than 120,000 tonnes of steel per year? [...] Courtesy of US company timi & leslie, I recently received a Mackenzie 2-in-1 Backpack diaper bag to put to the test. It arrived just in time for my two stopover solo trip to Florida with my 22 month old son, Koji, and so from thirty thousand feet, I can figuratively and literally state that this bag flies above the rest on function, comfort, design and security! Most full-sized diaper bags share the same basic features such as room for diapers, wipes, a spare change of clothes, two bottles, and extra compartments for a cell phone, wallet, keys, diaper creams, thermometer, little toys and other small must haves, as well as a changing pad. The Mackenzie 2-in-1 Backpack includes all of these features, but also offers additional features I really appreciate. [...] Toys can easily start to take over one’s house. And they often get bigger as the child gets older. Thankfully, my parents bought my son a multi-purpose walker – Radio Flyer’s Push Pull & Ride. This is a three-in-one toy: a push-toy walker, a ride-on, and a pull-toy storage/transporter for your child’s favourite toys! [...] … Sure enough, everything my little one loved about the iPhone, she loved about the iPad. A quick search in iTunes came up with a number of kid-friendly Apps that were both fun and educational. Throw in a few productivity Apps and the iPad becomes a very useful tool for parents on-the-go. In fact, I’ve written the majority of this review on the iPad while I was out and about. And did I mention that the iPad allows users to backup pictures from their digital camera using an optional accessory? This was particularly useful during a recent trip to Asia where I was able to back up over 2000 photos that I took using my dSLR. [...]
